MK 20 6/3/16 Race report

Distance – 20 miles

Runner – Laura Thompson

Aprox # Competitors – 700

Price – £27 affiliated £29 unaffiliated

What you have to show for it – Medal and a slightly sore knee

Course Description – Relatively flat route including 2 laps, which generally makes the most of what’s available in Milton Keynes – some stretches in green areas like Campbell park, Willen lake and a little of the canal. Redways and underpasses could not be avoided though! The first lap is relatively uncongested as the 20 mile race starts an hour ahead of the others. At mile 9 we were joined by the half marathoners, who provide a boost and some extra company. The route is gently undulating, and at times enjoyable, there are some more challenging parts – mainly for lack of stimulation – running alongside a main road and industrial buildings isn’t the most exciting part of the race to do twice after 6 and 14ish miles.

Water and Fuel Stations – Well stocked and frequent

Time of year – March

Why I chose this race – As with most people running this, it is very well positioned for a training run when working towards a spring marathon.

Organisation – Well organised with plenty of marshals. Progress from the finish line quick and baggage organised with no hitches.

Feedback Summary – An usefully timed local race for the Spring marathon training plan. The distance is a useful one for getting a clear idea for what’s possible over marathon distance. Not the most exciting route with laps and some dull industrial segments, but some enjoyable parts.

Will I be back – Probably, mainly for the timing as a Spring marathon training run.

Tips for next time – Leave a little gas in the tank for the short sharp incline right at the end!
